Hal Burchell  said this is  a reproduction of an Ernst Plank distillery. It has two alcohol lamps; one under the steam boiler and one under the vat. The first belt goes to the line drive, the second to the pump and the last belt turns blades in the mixer. During the last stage in the process, the mix runs down from the top reservoir over the evaporator to the bottom tank and then starts all over again.

Bill Payne said this 'Buckman' steam engine plant is completely original. Everything but the frames and brass legs is nickel plated. Most of the plating is still intact. The plaque on the boiler end is dated Christmas 1882 and Bill assumes the engine  was new at the time. He adds that an example of this engine can be seen in the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.

'Modeen' Marine Twin Cylinder Engine Unit c.1985

The above engine and boiler unit were available seperately from 'MODEEN' Steam Driven Models, 141 York Street, Oldham, Lancashire from around 1985. The firm was run by the late Ron Needham who advertised in the 'Model Boats' magazine until May 1998. In 1982, the engine (based on a Mamod locomotive cylinder/piston assembly) sold for £59.00. The all copper silver soldered 'CROMPTON' Marine Steam Boiler sold for £55.00. Intended for use with the above engine, it was fitted with a Mamod whistle, Stuart Turner safety valve and was supplied with a meths burner. The photograph above shows the engine and boiler mounted on a wooden plinth by the editor for display purposes. Being self starting, reversable and with speed regulator, the unit was suitable for radio control and provided a good workhorse for boats up to 40" long .
